It is very appropriate that Joachim Dudenhausen be the current featured member of the WAPM. For many years he thrived as leader of the prestigious Obstetrics Department of the Charité Hospital in Berlin and concomitantly served as dean of the medical school. He is an internationally recognized scholar with more than 500 publications and books during the past 4 decades. The quantity of this prodigious body of work is exceeded by its quality. It is important to note that the young Joachim published his first peer review article in 1973 with his mentor Eric Saling on “The present situation of clinical monitoring of the fetus during labor” in the Journal of Perinatal Medicine. This presaged a 30-year tenure as Editor-in-Chief of this same Journal of Perinatal Medicine beginning in 1983. We are grateful to Professor Dudenhausen for his indefatigable efforts in the pursuit of editorial excellence which have resulted in our official journal being a source of pride to all in the WAPM.
Joachim has received many honors at home including the prestigious Order of Merit from the Federal Republic of Germany for his outstanding work in Obstetrics and Gynecology. However, he is truly a citizen of the world as he has been awarded international honors including a Fellowship Ad Eundem from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Currently, he is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Cornell University and Deputy Medical Director of Sidra, Qatar.
Joachim is the quintessential physician leader and scholar, who embodies our WAPM spirit of globalism. We look forward to his continued contributions to our WAPM and the world of perinatal medicine in the years to come.
